Listening to the sound of the water rushing over the rocks is a relaxing way to spend any hot summer afternoon. If you spend much time in your yard, whether it is front or back, there is nothing like the sound of running water and the sight of your own pond. Putting in a pond is not nearly as difficult or expensive as it may seem. It is also a natural, relaxing, and scenic addition that can provide interest and enjoyment. Water is effective in drawing wildlife to your backyard. Consider locating your backyard pond where you can see it from a deck or patio. Have it blend in with its natural surroundings. The place to site a pond is a spot where it is perfectly level. The more level the pond, the less rock you will need to hide the liner. You will still require a large amount of native stone (especially if you plan a waterfall). What is a pond without a waterfall? If you don't have a slope next to your chosen area, build one up with rocks and fill from the excavation. Make sure when you order your pond liner you get enough to entirely line the course of the waterfall. You'll also need a pump to re-circulate the water from the pond back up to the top of the waterfall. Keep in mind that your waterfall does not need to be very tall to have the right impact. In fact, for plants and fish, it is better that it not be a large drop. A wide trickle will have a wonderful effect. Check with your local nursery on rules for water plants and animals for your area. No matter what you do you will have to clear the screen of your filter every so often so keep it fairly close to the each that is most easily accessible. You may want to dig down a little farther in this area so your filter isn't right near the top. Fish will help keep the bug population down but the moving water will help with that as well. If you want your water plants to bloom profusely in your pond, they will need at least five to six hours of direct sunlight. Start watching your yard for the light patterns. Backyard ponds and water gardens are for birds, butterflies, frogs, fish, and you and your family. Plan to landscape around the pond to provide habitat for frogs and birds that need land and water. If you plan to use a pump to re-circulate water, use a filter, or light the area, be sure electrical service is available. There will be less maintenance if your pond is not under trees. Most aquatic plants will grow better in full sun.
